Compound Bow FAQ

Can a compound bow be shot without using an arrow release?

  • Compound Bow FAQ

Myth's Question:
I'm planning on buying my own bow soon. But I was having trouble deciding between a recurve bow or compound bow. For the Compound Bow, is it possible to shoot an arrow without using a arrow release? (can I shoot a arrow with a compound bow just like how I shoot an arrow with a recurve?)

bluesea112's Question:
I have a PSE X Force compound bow, and I want to install a peep sight on the string. I have two questions: 1. Can I install the peep without a bow press? 2. If yes, how do I know the right spot to put it? I can't imagine the peep being an easy item to move up and down the string, so I want to get it right the first time. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

smokey_spunk's Question:
i have a PSE fire flight compound bow, 70lb, 31 inch draw length and I want to know how to take down the punds properly

dumdum's Answer

Where the limbs are attached to the riser , there are two screws that require an Allen wrench to adjust- they are on top of the bow limbs, one on each side.- to be certain that the adjustments are the same on both sides, tighten them down until they bottom out- then make one turn counter clockwise on both sides and check it - repeat until the bow is at the poundage that you want it to be- then you will need to check it for proper tuning- take a ruler and measure from the back of the bow limb where it meets the riser and go to the bow string- the distance should be the same on both limbs- if not adjust it on one side until both sides match up and are an even distance from the string to the backside of the limb where it joins the riser- good luck

M.P.M's Question:
If i were to get a compound bow what kind sould i get. Are they hard to use. I have shot one before but i dont really remeber. my neighbor can help me he has one. Are they any good

fourwindgsd's Answer

If I were you, a good entry level bow are some of the PSE bows. Nova, Durango, Deer Hunter etc. When I decided on a bow, I shot many different ones at an outfitter. When you shoot these yourself, you will notice definte likes and dislikes. When you draw back, notice smoothness in the cams without graininess and the release should be the same. I prefer the PSE's just for this reason. They are smooth! This means less distraction, and you can concentrate on your technique, form and accuracy with each shot. After you have chosen the right bow for you, practice, practice, you might want to shoot with someone who can teach you proper stance and form so you can be consistant each time. That's what causes 90% of people to stop hunting or using a bow, they can't keep a constant form to stay accurate. Hope that helps.

I am in the market for a New Compound Bow (No price Limit), Any Suggestions?

10 Point's Answer

You are the only person your trying to satisfy, so forget about the brands, and start shooting. Go to an archery shop and shoot every bow you can get your hands on.....then you decide. There are plenty of quality bows on the market. You should expect to pay $400-$1000 range, that includes accessories.

My right collarbone began hurting soon afterwards (I'm right handed) and I'm trying to figure out if its a result of bad form or if 'm just sore from using different muscles to shoot the bow.

If a compound bow has a 50# draw weight what is it capable of taking down?

  • Compound Bow FAQ

Howling Wolf's Question:
I have a compound bow at a 29" draw length with a 50# draw. If I were using field-tips or broad-heads, what would I be able to take down?

Tina's Answer

You can take some small game (rabbits, squirrel, etc ...) with the field tips but if you want to take a deer then you need a good razor sharp broadhead. It doesn't take much to penetrate the skin. That 50 lb bow will work. It may not move as fast as a 70 or 80 lb bow but it's still sufficient. If the arrow will go in 6 inches then when the deer goes through the woods the arrow will keep doing damage as the arrow hits against trees when he runs past them. The main thing you need to do is anticipate how a deer moves when the sound of a bow is shot. That quick flushing sound of the string will spook a deer before the arrow gets to it. When the deer hears it he will squat and turn back a lot of times. If you don't anticipate his movement with a slower shooting bow then when he squats the arrow could go over him when you take your shot because the deer spooked. You'll have to take a few shots and see what happens. You may miss the first few deer with your bow but after you get the first one then they will come easier and you can learn to better anticipate a deer's reactions. If your bow is quiet enough then the deer may not fletch at all. I like to go with 4 broadheads and at least 2 field tips in case I want to try for a trophy rabbit or squirrel while waiting on a deer.

novanoveu's Question:
I am interested in learning archery, not so much for hunting as for sharp shooting. Seeing as I am completely new to this field, I have no idea what reputable brands are, whether I should pick a recurve or a compound bow, and once I've decided that, how to pick the right model for me (height, pounds). Any advice?

  • Compound Bow FAQ

Jack S's Question:
I just got a bow online since im thinking about getting into archery. I thought that it would be easy, but as Im reading theres more and more info. I also cant find what bow I have, and the weight tag is missing. I have a bear compound bow, and says Black/Mag in small letters on the side. I looked on the website, and theres nothing similar. The serial is BM-15776. The weight pull is high, the guy said it was 50-60, but I would like to reduce it. Is it possible to reduce it down to 25 or less? My girlfriend will be using the bow also, so this draw is MUCH too heavy for her. We used a 10 pound draw during the intro class. Im only looking to shoot it for fun at targets, no hunting at all. I also read that you need heavy enough arrows so the bow wont get damaged. How do I find out? What kind of bow do I have? Thanks for any responses

  • Compound Bow FAQ

Satan's Question:
I am a HUGE fan of archery, but have never shot a compound bow before. I think that release aids and sights completly kill the whole idea of archery, so I was wondering if you can use a compound bow without using sights, just sit the arrow on my finger?
Thanks.

10 minutes late's Answer

You absolutely can. The only difference you'll see is actually getting a let-off at full draw length and not tiring out as fast.

bluebeest's Answer

you could check the line of martin at academy sports or the line of bear at wal-mart you can't beat them for the price and if you like the one you have no need to upgrade for a few years. You could always check your local bow shop for a used bow also a good choice

  • Compound Bow FAQ

hoops27's Question:
I was wondering what poundage of a compound bow will penetrate a Vermont deer.

dumdum's Answer

In my state of Louisiana, the minimum draw weight of 30 lbs is legal. Deer have been killed with this amount of draw weight, with a well placed shot-just behind the front shoulder,in the heart-lung area. With a low poundage bow, you will need to shoot a sharp two blade broad head like the magnus stinger, and choose your shot well. Good luck!

Crazy L's Question:
Ok. So im planning on buying a compound bow for my son because he really wants one. First We Live in New York. Second we need to know if you need a license for it. But he isnt going to kill anything he is just going to shoot foam targets.

robelwell46's Answer

its perfectly legal, im 13 and i have owned a compound bow since i was 12, owned it with out a license. I have also hunted with it. And a responsible law abiding citizen gifted it to me for no reason. It was his old bow. I oonly recommend that you buy one that he will be able to draw and shoot comfortably. DOnt forget a realease and arm guard......The relase is more accurate than fingers. I live in P.A. Too, philadelphia, and i was hunting on a farm, people from the pgc were there checking the land and they siad nothing to me, and they saw me in my stand, alone
